New Yorkers expected to get inflation refund checks after budget agreement

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York is expected to send out its first-ever inflation refund checks after an agreement was made with the state budget late Monday night, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The rebate was originally announced in December. More than 8 million New Yorkers can expect to get up to $400 per family, according to Hochul.

The checks were previously expected to be between $300 and $500, depending on income status. Hochul said the checks are funded by higher-than-expected sales tax revenue.

“I promised New Yorkers to fight like hell to put money back in their pockets and make our streets and subways safer. That’s exactly what this budget will do,” Hochul in a statement. “Working with our partners in the Legislature we’ve reached an agreement to pass a balanced, fiscally responsible budget. Good things take time, and this budget is going to make a real difference for New York families.”

It’s unclear when New Yorkers can expect to get their checks as the $254 billion state budget is still being voted on. Hochul said it’s possible changes will be made in response to actions taken by the Trump administration.

A cellphone ban in schools is also included in the budget.
